Wilderness Navigation Course
Knowing how to navigate without the use of your mobile phone should be a priority for all weekend warriors and explorers, regardless of the route you take. Smart phones are super handy when you want to avoid the traffic on the way home and check out the fastest route to meet your mates for a catch up after work ... in saying that, they are almost useless in areas if you're planning a hike through remote wilderness, and sometimes even not so remote wilderness on foot or by watercraft.
Satellite connectivity and battery life are the limitations of these devices. While we carry the latest communications devices on our expedition hikes and even our day hikes for safety, if you're planning to step up and further your knowledge and skills in the wilderness, learning to navigate conventionally with a map and compass is a great way to start. Wilderness navigation is at times challenging and uniquely rewarding.
At Escape-And-Explore we believe proficiency in understanding the landscapes you explore allows you the freedom to access (with landowner permissions) some unique space to traverse without the associated risks of getting lost and subsequent rescue operations. The skills we teach in our navigation courses can be applied to both terrestrial and marine environments.
The basics of our wilderness navigation courses allow you to know how to use a compass, keep you situationally aware of your surroundings, apply knowledge on how to use GPS and define contingency plans with route planning.
Run over 2 days, our approach is to spend Day 1 in the 'classroom' covering topics relating to the theory of traditional terrestrial navigation in both backcountry and front country settings. Day 2 is spent in the great outdoors applying the spectrum of our knowledge.
We provide all maps, compasses, theory materials, lunches and snacks. You provide your enthusiasm. Our navigation courses can be taken on an individual basis or with a small group (maximum size 6).
Costs
$500 per person (2 Days)
$1300 per family (2 Adults 2 Children 2 Days)
School Groups free to enquire
